Last week someone wrote something pretty negative on one of my Instagram pictures. It was my first real experience with a random stranger putting me down. She said, “You are probably in your 40’s, so you should really dress like one.” So one, I was a little thrown back by that and two I was surprised she knew my age! I take pride in most people thinking I look much younger than I am. I will be 43 this month, so she was bang on! I brushed it off quickly because I was not going to let someone who knows nothing about me make me feel self conscious about how I dress.
I did start to wonder though, what did she think was not age appropriate about it? Was it the crop top? Was it the open tearaways, or the whole darn outfit? Again, I stopped myself. Who cares? I love that outfit, I feel great in that outfit! Full disclosure, I do not have tons of self esteem so she did hurt my ego a tad but I wouldn’t want her to know that. That is the funny thing about self esteem. It is SELF esteem so that means it is how YOU feel about yourself. NOT what others think of you. We should all remember that. We should also remember not to put others down and say hurtful things but that would be a perfect world, wouldn’t it? Back to the subject at hand….
What is age appropriate? Is there such a thing? How should 40 year olds dress? How should 60 year olds dress? At what age should you stop wearing mini skirts? At what age should you stop wearing bikinis? Do you remember when Kelly Ripa wore a bikini earlier this year on vacation? There were so many people who criticized her for being too old to wear a bikini???!!! She is 47 and looks amazing! The back lash was so real that her husband came to her rescue and had to comment on her post and defend her.
So here is J Lo at 48 years old, looking truly amazing! IN A CROP TOP!!! Some might say this is not age appropriate but when you look this fabulous you can pretty much wear anything you want, at any age. I truly do think it is about how YOU feel and only you can decide what is best for you. Don’t let society or anyone for that matter, make you think you should be dressing or looking a certain way. We are all unique and special and thank goodness for that!!
So the positive thing that came from her negative comment led me to this blog. So I should actually be thanking her. I will leave this here for you all…….
