I love to take older clothes and turn them into something totally different. DIY is something I do a lot of! From dresses to skirts, from dresses to shirts, from pants to shorts to shredding and cutting out pieces of your clothes. The first time I tried to cut my own leggings I won’t lie, I was a bit nervous but I have so many leggings that if I ruined a pair would it really matter? I found a DIY video on You Tube and away I went.
I was really happy with how they turned out and was pretty proud of myself. From there I became more confident in trying other things. I have ordered a few clothes and when they arrive they sometimes aren’t quite what they looked like online. I am sure most of you can relate. I ordered a dress and I loved the bottom half of it but the top half was really boxy and didn’t look right on me. I was disappointed and didn’t like feeling like I wasted my money so I cut the top half off and it went from a dress to a skirt in a matter of seconds! Voila!
Some people can pay up to $200 for shredded jeans! No thanks!! I bought a pair of boy friend jeans at Old Navy for $20 and watched a couple videos on You Tube and learned how to shred them with an box cutter. After washing them a few times they were exactly how I wanted them. DIY and you can shred as much as you want or as little as you want all while saving yourself some money!
I was watching Housewives of New Jersey (don’t judge!!) and I saw one of them wearing a shirt with cut outs down both sleeves. I loved the look of it and made a mental note to look for one. Then I thought, no way I can do this myself! This one was definitely more challenging as the cut outs on both sleeves had to align. There wasn’t any You Tube videos for this one so I folded the shirt in half and used chalk to draw my cut outs. Then let the scissors to the rest. I tried it on and hoped for the best! Yes!!! It worked. Now I have a one of a kind shirt!
This Spring when I was going through my closet I was about to donate a pair of jeans that I don’t wear anymore. Then I realized I could turn them into long jean shorts that I have been wanting to get ever since I saw Kim K and Kylie wearing them.
So don’t be afraid to experiment and try some DIY’s. I have had a couple of fails but be sure to start with older clothes so you won’t be upset if you mess up. Good luck and have fun!

Now that Winter is finally behind us, I feel like we have a very small window for Spring fashion. Before we know it Summer will be in full effect and we will be in shorts and bathing suits. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE Summer. However, I love Spring fashion as well. Our jackets aren’t as bulky, our boots aren’t as heavy and we lose our scarves and gloves. So during this small window I take advantage and wear my Spring jackets as much as possible. When I was planning my outfit last weekend I knew I wanted to wear my army green bomber jacket and finger less lace gloves. So that was my starting point.
When I pull an outfit together I start with a piece that I want to wear and build around it. After deciding black would be the best colour to match the jacket I pulled out my bamboo leggings and a simple but cute black top. Now for my shoes….. it is a Friday night so I want to dress up the outfit but I also want to be comfortable so I reach for my black slouch boots. I feel like something is missing. Too much black! The jacket blends in with the black on black on black and the jacket is what I wanted to show off! I needed something to bring out the green so I tied a green and black shirt around my waist and voila!!
I was so pleased with how it came together! Earlier in my blog I talked about finding your different style, this look is definitely my Urban look. Which is always my favorite look for me. The lace gloves and the shirt softened up the look and made it an Urban meets Girly vibe.
Now for the accessories, which totally ties the whole outfit together. The lace gloves were my main accessory I wanted to show off so I kept my accessories to a minimum to make sure the gloves really popped.
I love how this outfit came together so easily and I got to wear exactly what I wanted while feeling fabulous from head to toe. Next time you are putting your outfit together remember how Styled by M does it and if you have any questions or want some help feel free to message me. It’s kinda my thing!

I clean out my closet two or three times a year but Spring is when I REALLY go through it. This is the time of year when your bulky sweaters can go away and your cute dresses and shorts come out of hiding! I basically take everything out of my closet and try it on to make sure it fits and to see if I will still wear it. My number one rule is if you have not worn it in a year you are not going to! I start a donation pile and I add anything I know will not see the light of day or doesn’t fit. Sounds harsh but I have never been one to think I might wear this again someday, or I hope to fit into these jeans again one day. IF you ever do fit into those jeans again they probably won’t be in style. Might as well donate them and have someone who really needs them wear them!
When I take everything out of my closet and start putting it back I organize it and re fold everything so it looks neat and easy to see everything. Usually when you do this you find things that were shoved in the back that you don’t wear very often because you couldn’t even see it! So you will now start wearing more of your clothes and if you are like me you might find things you forgot you even had.
Some questions you should ask yourself while deciding what is staying and what is going are…..
1. Will I wear this again? 2. Is it in style and does it still represent my style? 3. Do I feel confident when I wear this? 4. If it’s damaged am I actually going to take the time to fix it? 5. If I was shopping right now, would I buy this?
Getting rid of things that you know you are not going to wear anymore can feel so rewarding! Don’t forget to go through your shoes, jackets and purses too! You now should only have things in your closet that fit, that you love and that you will wear!

I must admit I do have a little addiction when it comes to shopping. I always think I need the latest new style or the newest Adidas pants that are on the rack. So every once in awhile I need to ask myself do I REALLY need this? There will always be my favorite items that are must haves for me though. In no particular order my must haves are sunglasses! I wear sunglasses even when it’s not sunny and sometimes indoors, especially while grocery shopping. I feel like sunglasses are an accessory for my face. If I am feeling tired, I throw on a pair of shades to I hide my tired looking eyes. If I don’t feel like wearing makeup that day, my sunglasses dress up my face. Going through my Instagram pics I realized most of my pictures are me with sunglasses on! It’s kinda my thing…..
My other staple pieces for me are bomber jackets. I love how light they are and how they fit. So perfect to wear while shopping so you don’t have a bulky jacket on and get too warm. I think they complete any outfit. Flower bomber jackets are hot this year! My favorite in my closet right now is my army green silk bomber. It’s so light and stylish and I feel like it won’t go out of style any time soon so it’s something I can wear for years to come.
For several years I have been wearing black leggings and I don’t think that will change anytime soon. I rarely wear jeans and you will almost always see me wearing leggings day or night, dressed up with a pair of boots or casual with a pair of sneakers. Since finding bamboo leggings at Shopgirls in Toronto (of course you can order online) I refuse to wear anything else. Not only are they incredibly soft and comfortable but they are well made and wash well. They won’t stretch, rip or pill. I am obsessed! Try them and let me know how much you love them! www.shopgirls.ca
Something else I can’t live without are hats! I wear hats just as much as I wear sunglasses! If I don’t have time to do my hair, I throw on a hat. If I don’t feel like doing my hair, I throw on a hat. If I am cold, I throw on a hat. Basically, you will see me in a hat 7 out of 10 times! I even have a vintage hat box! It’s perfect for storing them so they don’t get squashed in my closet.
Last but not least I love love love boots! Tall boots, short boots, black boots, brown boots or boots of any colour! Boots with dresses, boots with skirts, boots with shorts, boots with pants and of course boots with leggings. Boots can really make an outfit, even dress up an outfit. They give me a kind of confidence when I walk…. like these boots were made for walking and that’s just what they will do!
So with these five top items, I really don’t need anything else in my closet BUT you know that my closet is filled with much much more! Like I said I have a little bit of an addiction.
