SELF CARE……how important is this to you?

Sundays are one of my favorite days of the week.   Sunday is my day,  my day to recharge and prepare myself for the week to come.   So many people get caught up in their busy lives that they completely forget about themselves.   This is true for most parents as they are busy working and taking their kids to their gazillion activities all week.   It is so unbelievably important to take an hour or two for yourself each week.   I realize it is much easier for me to do this because I don’t have kids but if YOU don’t take care of yourself,  who will?  If you take care of you then your whole family will benefit from this.

Life can be very hectic and stressful at times but I can guarantee you that if you start doing more for yourself it will give you just the boost you need to get through a hectic busy day.   I am going to share some of my favorite things I love to do for myself.

Each Sunday I try to do a face mask.  This is probably one of my favorite things.  I am always trying new ones but my favorite one so far is a dead sea salt and Vitamin D clay mask.  It helps nourish your skin and helps correct your skin from UV damage.  I always feel like I just had a facial at a spa when I do this.   Yes,  the glass of wine is also something I do for self care.  It’s not really considered drinking alone when you have a face mask on,  I think I read that some where.

Ever since I was in high school I have been doing my own nails.  I know it can be fun to go to the salon and get a pedicure and manicure but I have never really been a fan of paying someone to do something that I can do myself.  Thirty minutes and my hands and toes are done.  This is a weekly thing I do for myself.   It saves me tons of time and money doing my own but I completely understand why people go to the salon to get them done.  Being pampered and having those few hours to yourself is everything.

I can not stress enough how important working out is.   Working out does not only help with weight loss but it keeps your insides healthy as well.   It helps release stress,  helps you sleep better,  makes you feel great,  improves your balance,  keeps you youthful,  gives you energy and it’s great for your muscles and bones.   Whether you do yoga or pilates, run, lift weights,  spin or box they all have these amazing benefits.  If there is just one thing you can do for yourself I would say this is it!  I do not know anyone who has ever worked out and wished they didn’t!

So please each week include some self care in your life!  Read a book,  take a dancing class,  start going to bed earlier, take a yoga class, go to the spa, take a walk or start a gratitude journal.  Heck,  take a nap if you need one!   Just promise to be good to yourself!

DON’T GET STUCK IN A RUT…. Change can be invigorating!!

Are you afraid of change?  Are you stuck in a rut?  This can happen so easily and maybe even become a bit depressing.  People tend to get comfortable in their lives and become afraid of the unknown.   Change can be healthy and exciting if you have the right mind set!

There are several things you can do to change how you look and feel,  starting with your hair!   Some people have had the same haircut for years!  A fresh new style or colour can make you feel like a whole new person.   Try stepping outside of your comfort zone.  If you don’t like it,  remember hair grows back or you can easily change the colour back to something you are more comfortable with.   Life is short,  take a chance and trust your hair stylist!

Updating your wardrobe will make you feel stylish and have you strutting down the street in no time!  I suggest buying a few new things every season.   Find out what the hot new colour is and buy a sweater or a pair of boots that colour.  You don’t need to spend tons of money on a whole new wardrobe either.  Sales racks and thrift shops can be your best friends!  You don’t have to be super trendy and wear what everyone else is wearing but I definitely think everyone should have some new outfits that they feel amazing in!

Do you wear make up?  Try doing something a little different.  Watch a You Tube video and learn the proper way to apply eye shadow.  Make your eyes pop!  Wear a little bit of eye liner and maybe even some lipstick.   A little bit of make up can give you a healthy glow and accentuate your best features.  Remember your face is the first thing most people notice about you.   I would even suggest booking a make up session at Sephora or MAC.  They can really give you some helpful tips.

Do you wear glasses?  When is the last time you bought a new pair and had someone help you pick them to suit the shape of your face?  I recently bought a new pair as mine were so old and outdated and made me feel tired and blah.

These simple little changes can really make a difference.  I am always finding ways to help boost my confidence because let’s face it,  we all feel a little blah sometimes and need a pick me up.  When you feel great,  you look great!  So the next time you are feeling like you are in a funk,  throw on your new pair of boots,  some lipstick and go for a walk but make sure you are strutting!

HOW FAR WILL I GO TO LOOK YOUNGER??……Bloody far, Vampire Facial far!

Aging is a natural part of life and some people don’t mind aging naturally and gracefully.  I am just not one of them.  I am very youthful and want to look as best as I can for as long as I can.  Some people might think that is vain and maybe it is but I am always looking for ways to look younger and to keep my skin healthy in the most natural and safest way.   My friend Karina works at Oxygen Medi Spa downtown Ottawa on Slater Street and is always posting about the Vampire Facials and how much she loves doing them because the results are so amazing.   I first learned about the Vampire Facial a few years ago when Kim Kardashian did it.   I am sure most of you remember the famous bloody selfie she posted.  I was intrigued when I saw it but I thought it was a bit creepy seeing her face smeared with blood.   Since then these facials have become incredibly popular and main stream and now I understand why.  Vampire Facials allow facial rejuvenation to happen in the most natural way.   It stimulates collagen production and improves your skin elasticity.

I have been to the Oxygen Medi Spa before for an Oxygen Facial when they first opened over a year ago.  I loved it and found the staff  highly experienced and very professional.  I messaged Karina to ask her about the facial and she said she does three to four of them a day and the results are astounding and permanent!  She told me she got rid of her Mom’s crows feet in three sessions and her Mom is 71!  THAT is what sold me.  Not only does it help with wrinkles and fine lines but it also helps with acne, acne scaring and can also get rid of stretch marks!!  I made my appointment for the following Friday without hesitation.  Basically a Vampire Facial uses your own blood to help promote the healthy activity of your skin cells.  It’s a combination of micro needling while applying your PRP (platelet-rich plasma) into the minute holes from the micro needling.  Your PRP contains high levels of protein and growth factors and when it’s applied to the skin it stimulates cell turnover.  I am going to share my experience with you from beginning to end.  First,  you need to know that this is completely natural and safe but it will get a little bloody,  hence the name Vampire Facial.    Karina has over ten years experience in the industry and is physician trained both in the U.S and Canada!  I trust her completely because she is incredibly professional and absolutely loves what she does.

Here we go….

First,  Doctor Pandian took two small vials of my blood.   Then spun it in a machine called a centrifuge in order to extract the PRP  from the serum portion of my blood.

After washing my face,  a numbing cream was applied and we waited 30 min. for it to take effect.  Was I nervous?  A little,  only from the unknown and not knowing what it was going to feel like.    There was a little buzzing sound as she ran the needles over my face and the best way I can describe it is a sharp scratching sensation.  It wasn’t painful because of the numbing cream.  It was more of a discomfort and it felt more sensitive on my forehead,  hairline and nose.   Karina made me feel at ease and I felt relaxed as she worked her magic.

The whole facial took about an hour,  30 min was waiting for the numbing cream and then 30 min of the actual micro needling.   The healing process only takes a few days.  The first day my face was red and looked like I had a windburn and about 7 hrs later there was a little bit of puffiness to my cheeks.  The second day the redness had significantly decreased but my skin felt tight and dry like it would from a windburn.   I have been putting cold pressed olive oil on my face three times a day and it’s healing quite nicely since it’s an anti inflammatory.  Day three you can hardly see any redness.  Since your skin is so open and vulnerable from the needles you need to protect your skin and wear lots of sunscreen for a week,  even if it is not sunny!  I will not see any results for a few weeks but I am confident I will be more than pleased.  Some people need more than one session and they need to be done six weeks apart.  Obviously the more sessions you do the more results you will see.  I took before pics and in six weeks I will share my after pictures!  Am I happy  I did this?  YES!!!  Would I do it again?  YES!!! Would I recommend Karina at Oxygen Medi Spa?  YES!!! Stay tuned for my results!!  Feel free to message me if you have any questions or if you want to know more about Oxygen Medi Spa as I would love nothing more to connect you with Karina to see if this is something that would be beneficial for you!

SHOPPING….. my favorite sport and I am sharing some tips!

I have been obsessed with shopping for clothes,  shoes, bags and accessories since I was nine years old.  I can easily say this has made me some what of a professional shopper or some might use the word shopaholic.   Either way I have learned some things along the way.  Whether you love shopping or dread it, I hope you find these tips helpful.

Shop with a list!

If you are going shopping for something specific it’s important to have a list to help you stay on track and stay focused.  It’s too easy to get side tracked or overwhelmed once you are there.   Try and stick to the task at hand.   This will save you time and even money.

Set a budget!

Trust me,  I hate this part but it’s so easy to over spend.  I always have a number in my head and remind myself that I will not spend more than that number!  When I see something that I don’t particularly need I ask myself,  how many times will I actually wear it?  Or WHERE will I wear it?   I hate wasting money as I am sure we all do so be realistic about your purchases.

Try everything on!

I am the worst when it comes to trying stuff on but I have learned my lesson.  Too many times I would come home and try everything on and there was usually something that I wish I didn’t buy.   Always make sure you ask what their exchange policy is and remember sale items are usually final sale.  Always try to wear something that is easy to slip on and off as this will make it easier for you in the change room.  If you are wearing a dress and are trying on shirts remember to grab a pair of pants off the rack as you will be bottom less in the change room and you might feel a bit silly with no pants on.  Once you have on your item, move around,  lift your arms and even sit to make sure it’s comfortable everywhere.  It’s a good idea to look at yourself from every angle to make sure it looks great from the back as well.  My rule of thumb is if I don’t love it,  I don’t buy it.

What will you wear with it?

If you don’t have anything to wear with the skirt you just tried on, what are the odds you will actually wear the skirt?  Too often we buy something with good intentions that you will find a shirt to go with it and it rarely happens.  Also,  what shoes will you wear with it?  So many times I have not purchased something because I did not have the shoes to go with the outfit.  I know,  I know,  I could just buy new shoes but I am following my list remember!! See how easy it is to get side tracked?

Don’t buy it just because it’s on sale!

We see the sales rack and are normally drawn to it.  That is great… IF you need it.  Just because something was $50 and on sale for $20 doesn’t mean you will wear it.   We all like a great deal but is it really a deal if it sits in your closet?

A few other small things that could make your shopping experience more enjoyable is to make sure you are not tired,  you have eaten,  you are well rested,  you stay hydrated and you are wearing comfy shoes….. after all shopping IS a sport to some.

FALL FASHION IS LOVED BY MOST…. so why are some men still wearing shorts??

As the seasons change so does our wardrobe.  I do not know many women that do not love fall fashion!  Boots,  sweaters,  hats,  scarves and even fall jackets!  As much as I love the warm weather and sunny days I am simply obsessed with fall fashion.   This summer was a real scorcher so I really embraced fall this year.   Is there anything better than a cozy sweater?   Fall seems to be the shortest season in Canada so we really need to take advantage and rock as many boots and sweaters as possible!

I was home this weekend visiting my family and I went to the arena to watch my niece play hockey.  It was a sunny day but also a brisk 14 degrees.  To me that is the perfect fall day, which means the perfect fall outfit was in order!   I like to dress for the weather because there is nothing worse than being cold, so knowing how chilly it would be in the arena I dressed accordingly.  I was pleased with my outfit and was excited for the day.   Call me silly but when you are wearing a great outfit, you just know it’s going to be a great day!

When we first arrived I noticed a man in shorts and my first reaction was brrrrr,  he must be cold.  Then I saw another guy in shorts,  then another and another.  I stopped counting at eleven.   It was a chilly sunny fall day but let’s be honest inside the arena, it’s much colder!  I did not see one woman in shorts, so this got me thinking.  Why do women LOVE fall fashion so much and why do men wear shorts for as long as possible?  Are they afraid of change?  Do they not want to let go of summer?  Are they still warm when we are chilly?   Are they trying to show they are tough and not cold?  I don’t get it!  Maybe they simply just don’t love fall fashion as much as us.

Men can continue to wear shorts in October and November if they darn well want but best believe I am going to sport my boots and sweaters for as long as possible!  Am I right ladies??
